Drive to Eastern Kyoto (20 minutes through city)

Kiyomizu-dera Temple (UNESCO World Heritage), approach up atmospheric Higashiyama lanes lined with pottery shops and traditional snack vendors, reach the temple built on hillside in 778 AD, walk onto famous main hall's wooden stage (built without nails, jutting out from hillside), enjoy panoramic views of Kyoto city and surrounding mountains, drink from one of three streams at Otowa Waterfall (choose wisely - longevity, success, or love!), explore Jishu Shrine behind main hall (deity of love and matchmaking - try walking between love stones with eyes closed), wander scenic temple grounds with seasonal beauty

Lunch in Higashiyama or Gion area, traditional Kyoto cuisine options: kaiseki (multi-course meal), yudofu (hot tofu), soba noodles, or obanzai (Kyoto home-style dishes), lunch not included - typical cost ¥1,500-3,000

Kinkaku-ji Temple (Golden Pavilion), see Kyoto's most photographed sight - three-story pavilion with upper floors completely covered in pure gold leaf, walk prescribed path around Mirror Pond viewing pavilion from multiple angles, observe how sunlight makes gold leaf shimmer and reflect perfectly in pond, stroll zen rock garden designed for meditation, browse temple gift shop for gold-themed souvenirs, learn about pavilion's history as shogun's retirement villa turned Zen temple

Drive to Arashiyama district (20 minutes west of city)

Arashiyama area exploration, walk through famous Bamboo Grove - towering bamboo stalks create magical, filtered light and soothing rustling sounds, visit Tenryu-ji Temple (UNESCO World Heritage) with its sublime pond garden designed for viewing from main hall, see Togetsukyo Bridge spanning Hozu River with mountain backdrop, optional: small garden visit or browse Arashiyama's charming streets filled with shops selling matcha sweets, local crafts, and seasonal specialties, time permitting: visit monkey park or take scenic train (seasonal)

Return to central Kyoto, drive through city (30 minutes)

Gion district evening stroll, walk down Hanami-koji street as dusk falls and lanterns illuminate, see traditional wooden machiya buildings housing exclusive teahouses and restaurants, watch for geiko (Kyoto dialect for geisha) and maiko (apprentice geisha) hurrying to evening appointments in traditional kimono and white makeup (sightings common early evening around 6-6:30 PM), experience the atmospheric heart of Kyoto's traditional entertainment culture, optional: pass by Yasaka Shrine beautifully illuminated at night
