About This Tour

Step back 1,300 years to Japan's first permanent capital on this enchanting Nara day tour. Although Nara served as the capital for only 74 years (710-794 AD), its cultural legacy includes some of Japan's most significant temples and artwork. Experience the magical interaction with over 1,000 sacred deer roaming freely through Nara Park, visit the colossal Great Buddha housed in the world's largest wooden building, walk forest paths lined with hundreds of stone lanterns to ancient shrines, and explore charming traditional streets. Nara offers a more intimate, relaxed atmosphere than Kyoto with equally impressive cultural treasures.

Tour Highlights

  • Nara Park Sacred Deer - Interact with over 1,200 free-roaming deer considered sacred messengers of the gods, feed them special deer crackers (shika senbei), watch deer bow politely for treats, photograph these gentle creatures against temple backdrops
  • Todai-ji Temple - Marvel at the Great Buddha (Daibutsu) - 15-meter bronze statue weighing 500 tons, explore Daibutsu-den (Big Buddha Hall), the world's largest wooden structure, see fierce guardian statues at Nandaimon Gate, try squeezing through 'Buddha's nostril' pillar (enlightenment guaranteed!)
  • Kasuga Taisha Shrine - Walk mystical forest path lined with 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns to this 8th-century shrine, experience twice-yearly lantern festivals when all 3,000 lanterns are lit, explore the primeval forest surrounding the shrine (UNESCO World Heritage)
  • Naramachi Historic District - Wander preserved merchant quarter with traditional lattice-fronted machiya houses, browse craft shops, museums, and cafes, try local mochi at Nakatanidou (watch lightning-fast mochi pounding!)
  • Local Specialties - Sample Nara's unique cuisine: kakinoha-zushi (sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves), narazuke (vegetables pickled in sake lees)
  • Seasonal Beauty - Cherry blossoms (spring), lush greenery (summer), fall colors (autumn) throughout park and temples
  • UNESCO World Heritage - Visit Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara
  • Duration: 8-10 hours (8:00 AM - 6:00 PM)
